The fact that Melanie recognized Ashley and Scarlett didn't, shows that Melly and Ashley really loved each other, for Scarlett it was merely a crush.

Mammy was smarter than just about everyone. She could see thru Scarlett’s southern belle facade and knew what Scarlett was really up to

"He's huh husban', ain't he?" Mammy's words sting harder than any of Scarlett's slaps

Melanie in this scene, my lord. She realizes who it is before Scarlett because it's HER man, and she finally runs and runs for what SHE wants. It's so empowering since Melanie is such a selfless character. And of course the scene ends focusing on Scarlett's struggle to overcome her own selfish desires, but it begins with Scarlett grasping Melanie's arm, concerned for Melanie whom she has grown to love. Absolutely wonderful scene. Oh! And that score!

You know it's real love when you can spot your man from a mile away

Anybody who thought Mammy was a "demeaning" part somehow missed the fact that Mammy had more integrity than anyone else--other than Melanie, of course.

Mammie was the moral compass to them all.

As a man who’s come back from a war, I can identify with this scene more than any other. There is absolutely nothing like coming home.

What gets me the most in this scene is when Melanie’s facial expression changes, then she goes to clutch her throat, Scarlett immediately takes her arm out of concern.
These actresses were absolutely brilliant.

That Vivien Leigh! she could change her stunning face from a dimpled angel to a fierce devil in an instant. I read once that before they casted her, they were looking for an actress that possessed charm and the devil
Himself. Not only could Vivien act both these out, but she physically showed the change in her face. I’ve never seen an actress be able to show two personalities that swiftly with just a look

Vivien could tell an entire story with just her facial expressions. The subtle change from elation, to confusion when Mammy stops her, to a vulnerable grief when reminded that he's Melanie's and not hers, to that cold, hard "I don't care" look, all within about 10 seconds.

Olivia de Havilland, what a great actress.. you literally can feel the extreme sense of joy and love upon Ashley's return home. RIP Olivia, your talent brought so much to millions and will continue to do so.

Only Mammy could tell Scarlett the truth and she always tried to stop her sometimes. Mammy had real power in their family. She wasn’t afraid of anyone😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

"Don't spoil it. He's her husband, ain't he?" Mammy knows. And Scarlett knows she knows.

I love Hattie McDaniel as Mammy. She spoke reality to Scarlet in this scene. Brilliant. And a true friend would speak the truth... even if the truth is painful reality.

I like mammy. She is such a character through the movie. I am glad that she had won the supporting actress too. There was a change of equality toward blacks back made the bridge.

The best *soldier coming home scene* ever filmed.

I always liked the moment that Melanie realizes who it is and Scarlet grabs her arm with something like true concern . Also love it when Scarlet admires Melanie for being "a cool liar" (after S shoots the Yankee deserter). Scarlet is a difficult character to like, so it's good to see sparks of humanity come thru on occasion.

Mammy dishing up reality & civility. Definitely my favorite character. She was the moral compass.

Love the shot of the three women standing together Mammy, Melanie and Scarlett. All vividly drawn by three gifted actresses.
