That's right, it's 2024 and the only legal protection you have if you have a kid is that you can't be fired for taking a few weeks off - oh, actually; yes you can but you can get a big settlement after a few years, only if you can afford a lawyer, because that's how the law works in the USA.

It's only a matter of time before the youngest generations will refuse to fight the wars for corporatism. Corporations feel they are ENTITLED to using the US military to defend their interests abroad. The entitlement has to stop until the people are taken care of the way they should be.

WOW. I retired from state government after 20 yrs in.
We at least got 6 wks paid maternity, 4 days sick, 3 days personal
and 3 days death in family leave. Left with paid leave upon retiring also.
Uncle Sam needs to fix that BS.

The ratio of what you’re paid to what your life and your family’s life is worth needs to change in America.

My company just recently started offering 6 weeks paid parental leave for us, which is unheard of. Older employees got one day off when their kids were born. I was blown away when they announced it, like wow it’s nice to work at a company that kind of treats you like a human being.

I implement time and attendance systems for companies, and its truly wild the disparity between what people in the US get vs the rest of the world.

One customer in one country had Parental, Parent, and maternity/paternity leave each of which had paid and unpaid portions. The US employees, nothing more than what was mandated by FMLA or local laws.

This is among the most unsurprising things a person can learn about the US. Once you've learned a little bit more about that country than what you get from movies and TV, you come to expect that they're the among the worst at everything, because 99% of the time they are.

Is family leave when you have a baby? That should be a mandatory paid leave. We get 12 months in Canada and you can split it up with your spouse so both could take 6 each or 9/3, or 12/0 which is the most common way it's used.

It's misleading to mention the change in leave in Norway without saying when that happened. Those numbers are old. Already in 1916, single mothers (unmarried and widows) could apply for financial support for six weeks before and six weeks after birth, although at that time, the support was very small. The aim was to help women take care of their own children rather than putting them in foster care, thus reducing infant mortality, cause foster children born outside of marriage were not very well taken care of, to say the least. Now we can choose 49 weeks with 100% pay or 59 weeks with 80% pay.
