FYI, this film was originally called "誰先愛上他的" in Taiwan. And if you translate the title directly, it should be "who loved him first."

One of the most tear jerking and stunning films I’ve seen... the characters are human, the dialogue is amazing and the plot is so real

This is a really "Taiwanese" movie and I can't be more proud of the recognition it get! It authentically depicts Taiwanese's daily life through the way actors talk and the music.

I am probably one of the few people who felt for the mother the most. Especially when she asked the therapist that last question.

i cried watching this, but not just because of the storyline with the father and his lover, but also because the mother-son relationship is so detailed in its crafting. i haven't seen a scene like that in a while where i could see myself at that table, where i have had that very conversation.

There is one scene where he was sitting & playing guitar, reminiscing the past time he had with his lover.

The expression when his eyes got watery is just out of this world. You could feel his sadness that he kept only to himself throughout so many years of enduring the loss.

I already knew that scene alone is an award-winning performance. Guess what, he won Best Actor at Taipei Film Festival for the role.

Just finished watching 'Dear Ex' on Netflix. My heart feels shattered, wrung out, heavy, struggling to contain a mountain of emotions. One of the most most beautiful films and great performances and I just wanna hug everybody involved in the making of this film. Thank you! And I'll be watching it everytime I wanna feel.. anything.

This movie should be a lesson to all those people still in the closet and taking on a lover of the opposite gender as a shield. We always feel sorry for those in the closet and celebrate their coming out yet we forget those pitiful spouses who devoted years of their lives to forgeries of a marriage and spouses who only ever saw them as a way to be "normal". It's better to remain single and known as a crazy hermit than pull someone into your hell because you are too afraid.

This movie is like an emotional declaration of love from all the characters. I saw it without wanting to and ended up crying. Totally recommended!

the mom's deep sorrow had me such a weeping mess, like that moment with the therapist and the way she was holding in her tears while asking that question truly hurt me. and let's not get into the lover's quiet pain, his loyalty, care and love. his affection and adoration for the dad were portrayed so clearly in his eyes, such talented actors. holy hell, my heart was not the same after this movie.

This is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever watched. It's a rollercoaster ride of tears and laughter throughout the movie. All the characters were so beautifully portrayed but the mother's character literally stole the show for me. What a beautiful movie! I highly recommend it to everybody.

I just finished this movie and it was SUCH a heartfelt story. I felt so much sadness for the mother. Cried when she asked the therapist the last question. If there was ever any love for her. I understand the need to be "normal" in society but it breaks both the parties involved in a marriage. The dad, who denied his own sexuality his whole life, tried to hide against the world by marrying a woman n using her as a shield. The son who really had no fucking clue about the emotional trauma both their parents went through n thus doesn't know where to place himself. The lover who got his heartbroken by the dad. The mother who was ultimately the most pitiful out of the three. My heart goes out for those spouses who are just caught up in the middle of a doomed relationship. It's such a pity that the society forces people to conform to the so called norms, ultimately denying their basic rights to live freely.

Great movie. Has it all: comedy, tragedy, drama, great characters, amazing actors (all of them, but the mother is phenomenal).

This movie when you watch it you just feel familiar. The mood feels so real because the story it tells and the characters that we discover watching it are actually real, and the pain and the love, everything. I just watched a masterpiece that it's difficult to found these days, and I watch it on Netflix, just wow. Definitely it's a great work, thanks Netflix, you did it very well.
