My college friend was murdered while working with the government overseas. Just a senseless killing. A 15 year old stole her sweater. The police chief found out and yelled at her. The 15 year old got angry, got some kids together and they beat up my friend. She passed. Her family made specific appeals that the 15 year old not be given the death penalty. She was my friend. I understand the feelings around revenge. But, in the long run, it only makes things worse. In addition to the death, you deal with breaching your own sense of morality and guilt from that. The world is full of problems. Best to stay in your own peace and not look for revenge.

I'm working on forgiveness myself. It's tough....especially when there's deep rage towards that person. I hear forgiveness is freeing and healing.

This is a profoundly moving story a journey from devastating loss to actual forgiveness a truly astonishing personal journey. I still cannot forgive even after almost 25 years of talking to my chair in the darkness and the relentless despair.

Marcus, thank you for sharing your story with us. We don’t deserve forgiveness, but forgiving others sets us free. Thank you so much.

Powerful, vulnerable talk. And insightful words at the end about forgiveness and how to view life's "defining" moments. More TEDx talks like this, please!!!

Marcus is one of my favorite persons ever. His story has touched me tremendously. His work, and that of CrossPurpose saved me from suicide almost a year ago.
