3 Games I Wish I Grew Up With

I love the Sega Master System, so when it came time to talk about three games I never grew up with but love these days, it made sense to talk about three from that system. Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, and Psychic World are three excellent games I wish I'd had growing up! This is a response to Nefarious Wes' original call video.

The introductory animation and outro text were created and designed by Saad Azim.

I knew that they meshed Alex Kidd and Shinobi, but I enjoyed that they made the Shinobi theme more cutesy specifically for this. I enjoyed watching this, coming from someone who has never touched a Master System.

I grew up with a Master System, and Ultima 4 in particular had a massive impact on me.

One of the smallest things, but I think it tells you a lot about how good Ultima 4 is and how games / media can affect people's behaviour, is that every game I've played since that contains a morality system / player choices has me struggle to make choices that go against the 8 virtues - I default to playing the Avatar in all games that allow it.

It's a more nuanced system than simply trying to work out the good choices from the bad in order to max out as n alignment meter - there's something satisfying in being a moral beacon in game world's such as get depicted in the Dragon Age, Elder Scrolls, Mass Effect series etc.

And I've been playing this way for so long now it's no longer like I really make choices in these games - it's just a mode of behaviour I default to without thinking.

Also that extends to other choice based games such as Heavy Rain, Detroit: Become Human, and the Telltale Walking Dead games - they, along with games like Dragon Age, constantly put me in difficult situations, that challenge my belief / behaviour system - testing my moral code.

I know I miss content in these games because I will never make certain choices - no matter how much people talk about how good the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood quests are I'll never complete the initial trials.

It's different when I play a pre defined character whose behaviour I can't influence, then I feel more like I'm watching a TV show or Film - but offer me a choice and I'm straight back to being the Avatar.

It almost certainly changed my behaviour outside of games too but it's harder to find obvious examples because of how young I was when I played it - it's just part of my nature now, like an instinct to live my life a certain way.

I don't think any other single game has impacted my life more.

Interesting list. I love the SMS and haven't tried any of these games. Look forward to testing them out, especially Psychic World.

Great Video! I was one of the kids who got a Master System for X-mas after asking for a NES back in day. I was upset at first but it became one of my favorite consoles.

I recently picked up Ultima Ruins of Virtue on the Gameboy, I think it's quite a bit different then the Ultima on the Master System lol.

"No one's in their underwear".. booooring :) Great video and nice picks.. just makes me think more about what you've told me; that I need to get a Master System to extend that 8bit goodness in my life. I swear, just hearing a tidbit of the Ultima music and I'm already whistling it while heating up my dinner.. and the Psychic World game looks good too.. someday, SMS..

Excellent video! Good job editing this! And great writing! I love that you put effort into this. As for Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, I actually downloaded it on my Wii right before the Virtual Console quit accepting money, so I have it, just haven't played it yet. Looks like I need to get on that. Thanks for the response!

Wonderful response! Retro Matt and I were nodding our heads in agreement with every new game you listed. The Master System is a great little console. I have quite a few MS games myself, I really love Double Dragon, Rastan and Choplifter. Nicely done! :)

My list would be for the SNES. I didn't get one til the very end of its life cycle, so I missed out on many classics, such as Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, and Harvest Moon. I've only started to play and enjoy them within the last year via emulation on my phone. Lol
