There's something so calming in your voice, outdoors, real weather that's really helping me at 5:30am, woken up with headache etc.

Mountain Equipment Lhotse jacket. Amazing piece of kit, highly waterproof and highly breathable 👍

Another great video Paul. I recently completed a 2, 193 mile thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. The east coast of the United States gets a lot of rainfall. The rain gear I used on this 5 1/2 month hike was the Mont-bell Versalite. It kept me dry and warm. An added benefit is they are ultralight. The boots I used are the Lowa Renegade GTX.

Hi from a South African living in Switzerland ..
Yep .. Staying Dry. Getting wet from without, within, or both 😊.
I belong to a Walking (Nordic) Group and my experience is that during exertion in adverse weather, no matter how 'breathable' the jacket may be, eventually one will get wet / damp. I tend to 'run hot' which further aggravates the 'getting wet from within' bit. Heavy rain, to me, appears to reduce the transfer of internal moisture to the outside.
That said, your point on the 'internal micro-climate is valid and as long as one is generating internal heat, all is well. As soon as the rain lets up, I tend to get the rain shell off, thus allowing my inner wicking synthetic layers to dry out .. the Internal Furnace normally keeps me comfortable. I monitor my internal body temp via my little and ring finger tips. When they hurt .. then I'm getting cold and then its time to push up the metabolism or don an outer shell.
Spare Dry Clothing .. very important. A lightweight Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Dry Daypack takes care of that .. albeit, notwithstanding the advertised 'dryness of the pack, said clothing also each in their individual plastic Zip-Loc Bags.
A good, informative posting .. thanks .. and a 🌹 to your better half who resolutely shares your Wanderings .. bully for her 👍.
Take care .. stay safe ..

Altberg boots, berghaus hillwalker goretex bottoms and keela munro jacket. I agree that bb cap is essential. Also a good base layer such as merino wool makes a massive difference to comfort for any condensation you do get.

REI just did a good film on waterproofs, how to reactivate the DWR coating when it starts to wet out by washing and tumble drying, re proofing when needed and so on.

I use both a light and heavy MVP and MTP British Army Gore-Tex Petroleum Jacket and Trousers, for fishing and hiking, I carry a high viz rucksack cover if I want to be seen, most of the time I don't, IMHO they're great quality and value for money, they do the job as well, if not better than any commercial outdoor brand name, I bought them Brand New, I would highly recommend them to anyone.

It's essential to keep the stuff in your backpack dry but a wet backpack is no fun. If nothing else, it gets heavy. Even with a cover, the west of Scotland weather gets water between your back and the unprotected part of the backpack. For low altitude, summer walking, a poncho that covers the backpack sounds like a good idea as long as it doesn't blow around too much, is scratch-resistant and doesn't weigh too much. I've not seen any that I fancy. Have you tried any that are OK?

I wear glasses so a wide brim hat is essential for rainy hiking. My go to is the Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero Gore-Tex hat. And yes, I live around Seattle and yes, we do get a lot of rain.

I have the Scarpa sl m3 bxx, they’re getting on for 10 years old now & I’ve used Scarpas own HS12 cream to treat them since new, they’re a fantastic boot and well worth the price
