Have you ever been in an emergency room? How much did it cost you?

my favorite part is when they find nothing wrong (at the time) and basically there is no treatment done so you're sent home basically the same as you were when you got there.

Just the doctor greeting you a simple “hello” cost you $500

About 45 years ago, my wife and I were traveling in Europe when she got hit by a car in Paris. She was taken to the emergency room. Received excellent care. I was sweating bullets the whole time about the bill to come. When we were leaving, I asked about the bill, saying stuff like please just send it to us, we'll take care of it, etc. They looked at us like we were nuts and said that there was no bill - they had national health insurance. It was such an eye-opener as to how other countries handle health care.
(Also, in case you're wondering, she was ok - quite sore, but ok.)

As soon as I heard 7 tests, I knew it was over

Physician cost was 24 dollars. Apparently no one set caught that. Seriously not the docs who are making the money. It's the hospital

When u get a medical bill in US, do not just pay. Negotiate, ask for discounts, question every item, ask to speak to the manager about reducing the bill. I had a bill for two stitches that went from 10K down to 200 dollars.

My jaw literally dropped. ITS 11K DOLLARS??? FOR A CHECKUP???

Edit - everyone is correcting me that it wasn't a checkup, I wasn't listening well enough. Still though! 11k is a lot for that!

“Make sure you have travel insurance when you travel to the US”

Better not to go

The bill alone is gonna make me sick for 2 months. 🤯

Ask for an itemized bill. Confirm every charge is accurate and that service/item provided. Unfortunately hospitals are notorious for incorrect billing.

Doctor in the US *gives u an olive* : "that would be 900$, wanna shake my hand, that's an extra 500$ for emotional support"

I went to the ER yesterday after head trauma. Paid nothing and only about €4, 5 for meds! Forever grateful for our healthcare system (Belgium)

You should have travel insurance no matter where you are going. My brother worked for a travel insurance company. If your situation is really bad or you are caught in some kind of disaster he was the one to get you airlifted out and possibly returned home for treatment.
Prepare for the worst but hope for the best.

Do not go to an emergency room if it isn’t an emergency. There are plenty of doctors offices and urgent care that take care of that type of stuff.

I waited 4 hours in ER with a dislocated shoulder and the doctor fixed it up in like 5 minutes. My bill after insurance is 2000 dollars. It's insane.

I live in Canada. In January I felt short of breath and heart pounding. Went to small town hospital ER. After confirming negative COVID test, was seen right away by doctors. Tests and X-ray taken. Put on an ambulance to have a CT taken in a bigger hospital, then back again (200 mile round trip). Hospitalized for blood clots and admitted for three nights. Medications, meals, snacks, in room phone, cable TV, high speed WiFi and parking are all free. When they told me I was better, I could just leave, there was no bill to deal with.
