You're making dinner and accidentally slice your thumb. Or maybe you're walking the dog and you roll your ankle. Do you visit your local emergency room? Or head to the nearest urgent care? Urgent care centers are popping up nationwide, but many people don’t know what makes them different from emergency rooms.

Urgent Care nurse here. I noticed some misinformation in this video. Urgent Care is not always "first come first served". We are required to triage patients according to acuity level. We often get patients with chest pain, elevated heart rate, shortness of breath and bleeding lacerations. Those patient will be seen first before a sore throat, cold, etc. Urgent Care will not always have short wait times. You can wait 3-4 hours during a very busy respiratory season, especially if a severe abdominal pain, laceration or chest pain walks in and has to be triaged to the ER. Many of us are staffed with only one provider and one nurse or MA.

Some urgent cares don’t accept our insurance. Also, urgent cares are closed after 5 pm.
