the fact NL has kept this game going despite the back-seating is a testament to how amazing it is

I’m surprised Wildfrost is being compared more to StS than Monster Train, what with the lane system and auto-battle-ish elements and all. NL even goes “dunky dunky dunk” when playing Wildfrost too.

Terrifying that NL's default rent figure is $2000 a month. Truly Vancouver pilled.

Has he compared Wildfrost's complexity to a shirt from Dan Flashes yet?

I love this game but it’s so punishing for any mistake. But at the same time, it definitely feels like each run is winnable. Just that you’re bad

Complicated is not a synonymous with hard, NL is right to say that WF is more complicated than STS, but that does not mean it is harder, it just has more things happening at once. STS is harder because mistakes are more punishing as they do not reveal themselves right away. You can make a mistake in STS you did not know was a mistake or that you thought was a minor mistake that ends your run 3 fights later, or on the next floor or boss. in WF, ever fight resets the stakes, you hardly carry any of your mistakes with you. If you lost your companions instead of just having them be wounded it would be more comparable to STS in that mistakes carry over. Also, the complexity goes both ways, there is more evil that the opponent can do to keep track of, but likewise you have way more options to rectify misplays.

Slay the spire is way harder imo. Wildfrost takes some time to get the hang of but after 40 hours I managed to finish the game with all 3 bells. Meanwhile my highest at slay the spire after 200 hours is Ascension 12. There's so much more you need to consider and optimize in that game while all you need in Wildfrost is to get lucky with a few cards/charms that combo nicely.

Slay the Spire kicks my ass, but I can do this game alright. I like creature math and break points, so maybe it's just a different focus.

I love how NL went from making fun of the reviews of the game to basically agreeing with them

I like how he compared it to not being able to pay rent. Something everyone can understand.

"Slay the Spire is elegant" ...wow.

wildfrost is more complicated, but StS is harder

I'm ngl I disagree with NL, this game is easier than slay the spire - it might be more complicated in the sense that you have to read more words on more enemies, but slay the spire feels way more unforgiving to me

I think Wildfrost’s complexity is mostly in battle. You know what everyone is doing and when they’re doing it, but then you have to figure out how to win from there. You have to worry about what you’re doing and what the enemy is doing at all times. Where as a game like Across the Obelisk, the complexity comes from deckbuilding and character customization, and most of the time you only focus on what you’re doing as you don’t exactly known what the enemies will do.

I think the thing that separates StS’s difficulty and wildfrost’s is the UI. Slay the spire is much easier and clearer to see the consequences of the next turn, which makes it easier to think several turns in advance (something that both games require), but with wildfrost it is a skill check/mini game of its own to ensure no aimless/barrage/smack back/teeth or any nonsense has passed your vision and isn’t going to ruin you. Personally I find this annoying. I like these games for the deck building and the long form strategy, having to constantly pine over the moment to moment tactics feels tedious

I definitely dont think wildfrost is that complicated, its just extremely unforgiving and strict. Sure, there's a grid involved, but order couldn't be easier to figure out- top to down, front to back. I'm pretty sure there are actually much more statuses and unique gimmick statuses in sts than there is wildfrost. In fact, the only unique effect in wildfrost that I can think of off the top of my head is overburn, but sts still had a similar effect in the poison archetype.

I agree that its more complicated, but I'd also say that its more difficult (and before any A20 sickos get on my case, im talking about base difficulty)
