As someone who lives in sapporo, yeah the underground is the best in winter, but honestly the snow isnt that bad when youre used to it. I actually like it. That and the fact sapporo snow fall is nowhere near as heavy as asahikawa or obihiro. Also aomori has a higher average snow fall than sapporo. 😊
I also like the local trains. The train to otaru is along the coast and has some of the most beautiful views

My favourite way to Hokkaido is the ferry. Last October I took the overnight ferry from Sendai to Hokkaido. It was like a mini cruise, it was awesome. Worth looking into!

And Sapporo isn’t even peak snow and cold in Hokkaido… when I lived there Sapporo was like a vacation from real winter…

Inside of central Hokkaido the trains are quite nice though so I still don’t get why there is no speedy connection between Hakodate in the south and Sapporo… you will be faster by car.
