I don't think changing to survival was a bad idea, when i watch other youtubers that play hardcore i always have a weird feeling that the world gets lost, even though it isn't mine.
That's one of the reasons i like people
like mogswamp and you, because on your and other people's survival worlds I don't have to be scared that the series discontinues :D

You can respawn in hardcore by going to the option where you can go to spectator, then when in spectator in the world switch to creative of survival

If you die on your hardcore world just make a backup of it in survival and continue on that one

How to survive for a really long time in a hardcore world:
Step 1: find village to survive first night
Step 2: take all the seeds, chests, coal, dirt, saplings, water and beds (maybe not all the dirt), also wooden hoes
Step 3: get enough obsidian to make walls and a ceiling for a decently large room
Step 4: construct an obsidian box with a bed, wheat farm, crafting table, torches, tree farm inside
Step 5: you now have infinite food and stuff
