Anyone who says they don’t get jazz should watch this. You can feel their fire and soul from this performance. Incredible.

Years ago I made a CD of every version of Naima I could find. Played it over and over and over again.

My heart stopped at 6:18.

A lost love,
Not knowing if she would ever come back,
then at the right moment I looked,
And there she was...

With one exception (Ralph Gleason's "Jazz Casual" in 1963), ALL the extant TV footage of John Coltrane as a solo artist comes from Europe. The U.S. should be ashamed of itself for not giving one of its great musical geniuses more respect and acknowledgment during his lifetime!

This is the end of the original great quartet and Trane empties the clip on his solo after Tyner's piano solo, great performance.

What a beautiful ending…. One of my favorites. Thank you so much for posting this performance. For those new to the song, really focus on the build up from beginning to end. It’s a masterpiece. The climax is when Coltrane does a continuation of his improve while slowly incorporating the melody (at beginning). The ending is the resolution to what seems like chaos. Every single note plays around the melody, even with the modal progression.

2:41: First heard this over 25 years ago when I first saw this footage. Still one of the hippest things I’ve ever heard.

I was born 25 years too late. Amazing live artistry here from Trane and his quartet. Naima is one of my very favorites.

McCoy Tyner right hand is an excellent illustration of how an octopus gets from point A to point B...and then back again.
