Serverless Servers are weird...

Vercel's new "serverless servers" sure stirred up a lot of controversy. But they're also dope. Like REALLY dope. Let's talk about why

many people are mad about video length, but most of best useful videos I have wtched on this channnel about react, databases, UI libraries and more are around 50 min long.

This feels like "I am creating a situation that breeds a problem and selling the solution"

The long form videos are great. So many bits of info you can pick up from them. Please don’t get discouraged by the comments asking for short form content

Theo, I enjoy this long form content. Thank you for going through this stuff. I really appreciate the videos you do on your strong areas, like React, and get a lot out of them. Keep up the good work.

Basically if you want to write an app, maintain it for years, and realistically handle all the traffic you need, STAY AWAY FROM VERCEL STAY VERY FAR AWAY

epic video! GG. Are we looking at any 8+ hours content like Lex in the future? :))
The way you manage to interleave fun, information and technical makes this a joy!

It sounds like a VPS with extra steps and nice markup

I don't understand, maybe I'm missing something, and am willing to be corrected. As much as this engineering is awesome, this will at best perform as well as a single node instance on a VPS for small to mid size loads. I say 'at best', since I'm assuming that the overheads here with regards to the socket and message passing is zero, which it won't be. Not to mention the multiple moving parts that make it feel like a house of cards, whereas a single node instance is so much simpler.

I might still go for this if I have near-zero users, which, you know, no shame in that. But if my Vercel bill is going too much past $5, a VPS will not only be cheaper, but also likely faster, and it will likely scale to tens of thousands of users. Throw a free Cloudflare proxy in front for edge caching if you want.

Again, maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see the appeal of this.

Didn't Cloudflare do it first with their Durable Objects? Shared state / objects, event-driven websockets (for real-time chat applications or any WS-based thing basically), billed only for CPU-time and invocations—Hence how it could function as a "serverless server."

I just started watching though! My guess is that Vercel might've released something with a bit more control which would be exciting to see))
