Ketzbook demonstrates the exothermic chemical decomposition of Ammonium dichromate, which is a common form of "hexavalent chromium." The decomposition produces chromium(III) oxide, nitrogen, and water vapor. The decomposition process resembles an erupting volcano as the solids expand in volume during the chemical reaction. The decomposition reaction is also a redox reaction, as the chromium is being reduced and the nitrogen is being oxidized. Although the reaction is rather exothermic, it requires a high temperature to overcome the activation energy, and burning magnesium is used to initiate the reaction.
