Sorbitol (Alditol)- A sugar alcohol that can damage your eye lens (Cataracts), Schwann cell (Neuropathy), Pericytes (Retinopathy) In Diabetes…Diabetic retinopathy (eye disease in diabetes mellitus), diabetic peripheral neuropathy (sensory-tingling and numbness in patients with high blood sugar). Cataract (damaged eye lens by osmosis) in diabetes. Sorbitol has multiple hydroxyl groups (OH-), therefore hydrophilic, and attracts water into the eye lens by osmosis, leading to damage to the eye lens (cataracts- the lens become opaque).

2:30 This is amazing! I've never known this and I was often mixing them up!
1:52 I have a question here.. So, Sorbitol is osmotically active that's how cataract happens, isn't Glucose osmotically active too?
5:10 😂😂

Where does the reduction reaction occur, in the blood or tissue? How does the sorbitol diffuse into the tissue against it's concentration gradient. What about the osmotic gradient?

As a diabetic type 2 with retinopathy undergoing treatment ( 6 times anti vegf injections ) I am very surpised to discover right now, that my sweetener can be the culprit for my condition, for it sorbitol content! Thar could be the reason for my retinopathy being so persistent to present date even with ha1c in the middle 5. Hpe that with no sorbitol on my foods, the condition could improve.
