River Bugonzi cascades from the Kamachumu Plateau over a cliff down to Ruhanga Village forming spectacular waterfalls that can be seen from miles away. It ends up joining River Ngono, which in turn, joins River Kagera, emptying in Lake Victoria. The falls are 60km from Bukoba Town, adjacent to Ndolage Hospital and used to provide electricity to the Hospital.
Local mythology has it that there are people who jumped over the cliff to their death and can occasionally be heard wailing, especially when the River water level is high.
There is also the story of this powerful king who wanted to turn the clear water of the falls red. So he had animals and even humans slaughtered draining their blood into the river before abandoning the futile adventure.
It is a natural wonder, well-worthy visiting. The water is crystal clear.
