How To Play Outside

In today's video we are going to talk about how to play outside.

In this case we are going to work over a G Dorian backing track. On any of the church modes we have seven notes that make up the scale and five notes that don't belong to the scale.

We will be focusing on those five "outside notes". These five notes create a hidden pentatonic scale that will be found a half step above in the fretboard.

It's important to not play all these notes at once, but using rhythmic phrasing to introduce the outside sounds. Think like a drummer and play outside where a drummer would place his fills.

Been playing for 30 years and this is the best explanation of playing out I've ever heard. Top notch!

One thing worth noting is that you don't have to match the specific "outside" pentatonic to each mode. You can overlay any pentatonic shape in an outside context. And if the result is that some of the notes are "inside" it actually integrates the "outside" phrasing with some inside sounds... basically if you focus on the rhythmic phrasing you can't really go wrong. It's all about resolving back to inside. Tension and release.

Another great lesson. And useful. Especially the "phrasing like a drum fill" suggestion. Fun stuff! thanks!

Thank you for stating it this way! I’ve been trying to think of how to teach that to my students-well put!
Talking about the playing outside stuff

So whatever mode position one is playing in, a half step above, playing a pentatonic scale will give the 'extra 5 notes' for the 'outside' feel. And it also means a major mode position means playing the major pentatonic a half step above. And that 'rule of thumb' applies for any position or degree of any given mode all over the neck. Wow, that's blown my mind how easy it is to map the positions for playing 'outside' Thank you, David!

Salut David. Encore merci !!!

Mr Wallimann kudos for making another crystal clear video, one thing I would love to see would be an explanation of the major seconds minor seconds 4ths 5ths I don’t know the terminology for those notes but a video on those would be amazing!!! Thank you again I love your channel, probably my favorite

Picked that up from a keyboard player some time ago. Think of a piano keyboard. White keys are C Ionian (D Dorian) and, of course, all of C majors relative modes, while all black keys add up to Eb minor pentatonic. Similar to "side slipping." I like the drum fill tip...seems like I've heard you use that analogy before. Thanks David Walliman!
