I will say, perhaps the updated safety measures should be some sort of fire resistance enchantment. Just strong enough to withstand a similar exposure, and to be worn only when in the vicinity of the lava moat. Perhaps have them stored in a guard post on either side of the moat, maybe even doubling as a "punch card" to not only act as incentive to keep track of theirs, but as disincentive to anyone tempted to sell such an enchanted object (or give it to a spy.)
