1980's THROWBACK: 'THE RAVENITE'

On first glance, 247 Mulberry Street looks like nothing more than another high-end boutique in NoLita, but the cracked tiled floors of the CYDWOQ shoe store offers a glimpse back to the days when the mob ruled New York. Once a mafia nerve center entrenched in the core of Little Italy, the Ravenite Social Club hosted the Anastasia and later Gambino Crime Family for 66 years.

The big Lincoln engulfing all the camera space as the beat kicks in is a magical moment. This gets played, front to back, multiple times a week. Very entrancing.

a unique song, for a unique era! The 80s and 90s were the era of a serious and unforgettable breed of people and atmosphere!

I love watching old tapes of people just going about their business, it’s a real way of time traveling.

I see the following:-
1.) NO graffiti.
2.) Elderly people walking unafraid.
3.) NO beggars, bums, pests.
4.) Clean/properly maintained cars & buildings.

Seems to me there was order & real pride back then.

I never seen this footage before. Gave me chills. After losing my dad and kid brother I came across a quote. "I am hopelessly in love with a memory, an echo from another time, another place." Thank u for the glimpse back to the last days of the NY that meant so much to us.

1986, my dad took us to NYC for the weekend for a vacation (sight seeing) I'm running up ahead like most 13 year kids. I go running up to a limo with tinted glass, trying to look in the windows. My dad runs over and apologizes to the driver who is waiting outside. He says: No problem and let's me get in the back of the limo and look at everything. My dad was always mistaken for a mob member and I think we just got a friendly pass that day. Great memory

Strange seeing people living in the moment. Here we are watching them 40 years later. Most of them all dead

This was the NYC I knew, it had its own flavor. You told a guy at a deli for a regular coffee he knew what it was. A slice was a slice of pizza. This overpriced, overhyped, overbuilt one now is a shadow of its former self no matter how many glass towers you build or all the hype you try to give it. Fake can’t be real,

A gold medal to the camera man, it took guts to stand out there and film these dangerous dudes. Had to be like swimming around sharks.

Imagine living in one of those apartments across the street from the ravenite back then...you wouldn’t even need a television.

Do you know how good this music fits? You should get an award for this. My favorite video of yours.

I love seeing this city when it had soul. No hipsters, no elitest liberals up their own asses, the communities had personality.
