The Shocking Truth: Why Jesus Did Not Abolish the Law

In Matthew 5:17 Jesus tells us that he did not come to abolish the law or the prophets, but to fulfill them. Just a few verses later he tells us that if we hate our brother we are guilty of murder. If we look at a woman with lust, we are guilty of adultery. He made the law stricter. The people at that time believed that the way to heaven was by keeping the law. God's standard is that someone must keep it perfectly and we know that that is not possible. The way to eternal life is through belief in Christ. Believers do not obey the law to get to heaven, but they obey it because they are believers and want to please God.
