This YouTube title/thumbnail is a bit misleading and it feels reductive to relegate Spark The Electric Jester 3 to just "Sonic Adventure But Better", since it's so much more than that, but you cannot deny the inspiration it wears on its sleeves. That and this is an amazing indie game that desperately needs more attention but big Sonic channels will not cover it because it just "isn't Sonic" despite gameplay being everything Adventure fans wanted. But I digress...

I've been waiting a long time for Spark The Electric Jester 3 and from what I've played I was not disappointed at all. The high speed platforming is as thrilling as it can get with a very high skill ceiling, coupled with superb level design that actually is built around a character with this much mobility and never gets confusing to navigate.

And the combat, much like Spark 2 before it, has seen a massive improvement in regards to aerial combat and combo strings. There's a lot of creative freedom when it comes to making Devil May Cry looking combos in a game where some would argue, doesn't even need it, but it has it anyway. My gripe with the combat isn't so much your movepool, as much as there aren't really a whole lot of enemies with the same kind of mobility as you to really force you to improve, with the exception of a few bosses, those where the highlight for me. And the weaker enemies you 1-shot with a homing attack, act like they do in any other 3D Sonic game, obstacles that try to impede your progress when navigating the level. This is still an indie game made by just 1 person, so expecting Devil May Cry or Platinum Games levels of depth with combos and enemy encounters is unrealistic, but still, as far as combat goes, I think it does a really good job in this kind of game as it is without clashing.

Also the story... it's definitely something. It's not bad per say, it genuinely got me invested for the little story that it was but near the end the plot goes from 0 to existential dread really fast and that is all I'm going to say to avoid spoilers.

Spark The Electric Jester 3 definitely scratches that Sonic Adventure itch I've been having for so long and I urge anybody, especially Sonic fans to play this amazing game. It's not perfect and it sure damn isn't a replacement for Sonic The Hedgehog, especially with Sonic Frontiers looming on the horizon doing its own thing (which I am glad btw) but I'd be lying if I say I didn't have a good time.

Anyways, please enjoy the video.
