One of the greatest living British writers is undoubtedly Jonathan Coe, and I wish you'd included him in your list. His "House of Sleep" is one of the most engaging and interesting novels I've ever read.

Why did Jane Austen not write under a male pseudonym? Or did she?
Why? Because she lived earlier than Charlotte Bronte and George Eliot who used
male names.
Had society become more anti female?

Sherlock Holms is well known all over the world. He is the greatest man of the 20th century. We love him very much. Thanks to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I'm from Kazakhstan.

I think it's a mistake to limit the understanding of an "author" as simply people who have written 1, or multiple, novels.

I can list 3 authors that most people here will probably never have heard of, but are 3 of the very best storytellers and world-builders in the history of the written word.

Coincidentally; all 3 are Japanese.

1. Eiichiro Oda; the creator of One Piece. A man who blends every genre imaginable together seemlessly, effortlessly. A man who writes/draws new manga chapters every single week, and has done this for the past 25/26 years on the hìghest level, topping the charts practically every single year; ànd is the highest grossing mangaka of all time.

2. Tetsuya Nomura; the genius from gaming company Square Enix, who is behind game franchises like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. But what I want to discuss is Kingdom Hearts. Anothet franchise that is over 25 years old, has dozens of games in the franchise which are all a giant interconnected story.

3. Hideaki Sorachi; the creator of Gintama. Which is basically what One Piece would be if it was made for an older audience. Even their filler and bottle episodes are some of the most hilarious things ever.

Sure; they are two mangaka and one game director; and not classical novelists.

But trust me; their stories are worth it.
The ònly book I have èver read that has impressed me long enough to be remembered like I remember these 3 geniuses mentioned above; would have to be Terry Brooks' Armagheddon's Children.
