On today's 3rd of October, Germany celebrates Unity Day, commemorating the reunification of West and East Germany – which plays a big role in EU history. 🇩🇪🎉

Around 1990, German chancellor Helmut Kohl negotiated a lot with French president Francois Mitterand. 🤝

Mitterand wasn't the only one in Europe that was skeptical of a united Germany, still remembering the 2nd World War. 🤔

Mitterand posed demands for his Yes that would bring Germany into the European Community. 🇪🇺💼

Kohl refused them at first but in the end conceded. Some say it was the price for reunification, others say Kohl saw that a future Germany may only exist in a European perspective. 🤷‍♂️💬

While the US were immediately in favor of reunification and probably would have pushed it through anyway, Kohl explained the European compromise to US president George H. W. Bush with the words: "We need friends". 🇺🇸🤝

Happy Unity Day, Europe! 🎉
