ECOTRONS EFI - 5.5HP Turbocharged EFI Engine - Update

Here's a new video of my 5.5HP turbocharged, fuel injected engine which I took today. I put a lot more work into the engine since last time, and I hope to make a powerful inverter generator out of it in the coming year.

The engine is fuel injected by the Ecotrons small engine EFI kit, which I highly recommend. The engine starts easy, runs very smooth and sounds great, and the EFI is very useful for fine tuning the engine under loads. I am running the EFI open loop at the moment, which means the O2 sensor is disconnected, until I extend the exhaust system.
I used a small VZ21 turbocharger, which I found off eBay. The turbocharger is fed with oil under pressure, which is pumped from the engine sump through a large oil cooler, and then to the turbo via a power steering pump which is driven by an electric scooter motor. The drive for this is just a rubber band for the moment, until I find a suitable alternative. The turbocharger is also water cooled by a custom loop, utilising parts I had laying around. The water is kept cool by the use of a copper coil to dissipate heat.

I am monitoring the sensors on the ECU via Bluetooth to my Nexus 7 Android tablet running the ECOTRONS DroidCAL app. Usually you would get an RS232 to Bluetooth converter from Ecotrons, or off the internet, but I used parts I had at home to make my own. The RS232 port from the ECU is connected to a RS232 to USB cable, which plugs into my Beaglebone Black Rev.C. I also plugged in a UART Bluetooth module in to the UART1 port of the Beaglebone, and connected the two serial ports using software. I have made a Python script for the Beaglebone which loads on startup via crontab, and configures everything.

I have also added my own custom made cooling shroud for the top of the cylinder, to keep CHT temps cool. Combined with the bottom shroud which was already there, it acts like a tunnel ram for the air! The shroud was made from 0.4mm galvanized steel, and worked on at home with tools I had.

Overall, the engine runs great, and compared to my last video it is definitely improved and ready to be put to use as a generator.

for those of you making crap comments about this video, .. I would just like to ask why would you ? this guy isnt hurting anyone ! and he is experimenting and learning !! whats possibly wrong with that ? Man some of you really need to get a life instead of just criticizing everyones video's . wtf wrong with you ?

I'm planning on doing exactly this on my Honda GX140. I want to put it on a go kart or a minibike. It's awesome to see someone else successfully EFI convert and turbo an engine that small.

Remove the governor, add electronic ignition, anti lag and 2 step thru arduino, and post a load test video!
Just my two cents

This is just really awesome mate!! I hope too see heaps more videos of this! And would love too see the turbo spool up and the wastegate actuator open :) keep doing what your doing bro coz your doing something ive always dreamed of doing! And i dont think i have seen any videos on youtube pull off turbo charging a small motor as good as you have done it!! Good job and good luck mate!!

You should remove the governor in order to get some hp from it...

Need the fueling injector in front of the turbo. Prob running 1 psi if that

What is the Beaglebone doing? Ecotrons ECU controls the engine.

Nice work - you've had a lot of fun with that. I'm about to fit a microsquirt to my XR250 - might just fit a turbo too....

Great video and description! I was thinking to turbo charge my 2009 Honda 420 ATV . Any suggestions ?

Thats cool how did you use watercooling in an aircooled engine?

So sick man ....can you make a new video on the build ...an update on what it's powering now !!! Or did it blow up ??? I know there putting out prob 15 lbs of boost easy on that prob closer to 20 !!!! Making power easy !!!! But I heard someone say to remove the governor !!! You should !!! It's only 300$ more in parts and after the 3000$ you spent already it will be worth it to be able to actually wake up the beast that you built !!!! It is not even at 1:10 the potential power making capability at 3600rpm ....spin the turbos up to 10'000 and you can absolutely blow you tube away with views on some double springs 35-50 lbs ad a cam as big as you can find !!! If you call nr racing you might even be able to source a steel piston rod !!!! Better than aluminum any day and you won't worry about weight with the power that's making Then take it out for a test run and show us how good it is all drooling and super jellous of that build ....congratulations man !!!!

You mind letting me know where you got the ecotron tuning software? I need it for a project I’m working on myself. Have Ecu/TB units but no map editing software?
