As the European Commission is working on proposals for a New Competition Tool that
will make European competition policy fit for the modern economy, the Lisbon Council
convenes the High-Level Webinar on Competition Economics: Rethinking Antitrust
Law.
A. Douglas Melamed, professor of law practice at Stanford Law School and former acting
assistant attorney general in charge of anti-trust at the U.S. department of justice, offers an overview of Antitrust Law and Its Critics, his recent, widely discussed paper, which looks
at contemporary issues in competition policy and the emerging debate on where and how
competition policy might best be applied. Jonathan Faull, chair for public affairs at
Brunswick Group, former director-general for justice and home affairs, capital markets and
the Brexit Task Force, as well as a seasoned European Commission competition official,
shares some findings from a lifetime at the forefront of European competition policy.
