A lot of people criticize Karajan for putting himself into the center of these visual performances, but look how much he makes you understand the spirit of the music with his movements and expressions! It is absolutely inspiring and moving to see this vital aspect of music. The tempo is perfect (it's "Allegretto" after all), the melodic phrasing is refined and thoughtful, the atmosphere has almost some kind of divine character ("divine" as a form of emotion that goes beyond simple impetuosity). It's unbelievable how one is able to express so many feelings through music. Recordings like these are the reason I love Beethoven and Karajan. They fit together perfectly.

I've listened now to over 35 different treatments of Ludwig's mystical 7th/2nd, and there is no comparison to Herbert's powerful interpretation. I can't remember ever hearing a musician whose eyes were closed give us anything but something special. Music is visceral...why not shut everything out and FEEL the vibrations. I love it.

Von Karajan was one of the few conductors who could make a symphony orchestra out of 100 individual musicians. A genius !

I love that everything is tied together, and there are no gaps. That is the Karajan style, and in my eyes it is the best way to portray the beauty of Music.
There are few things more exciting than that sense of fleeting Time, when by the moment you react, the music has already move on, and you are constantly playing catch up.

ich habe ihn schon oft in München sehen dürfen, immer toll zu hören, wie er das Orchester geleitet hat, ein Ausnahmekünstler

Pure beauty to enjoy in our times of vulgarity and mediocrity. Last remnant of what we used to call civilization.
