In this video I continue repairs on my 2005 Toyota 4Runner. This repair process started as a simple CV axle replacement and quickly snowballed into a knuckle replacement as well as a while-I'm-there upper and lower ball joint replacement. So far that's the plan but... plans can quickly change. This specific video shows the lower ball joint replacement which includes the headaches and hardships I went through while getting the job done. The lower ball joint I used in this video is the MOOG K500417.
One notable hardship was the fact that the ball joint was seized in the lower control arm. No matter what I did it wouldn't budge. Then I used a torch to heat up the hoop that holds the ball joint which makes the metal expand. That expansion, with some taps from a hammer, helps to break up the corrosion that holds the ball joint in there. As soon as I tapped the heated ball joint hoop with that hammer the ball joint broke free. This was very surprising to me. I obviously knew of this method to break stubborn bolts and such loose but have never really tried it myself. It definitely worked quickly and efficiently. So, if you're trying to replace a pressed in ball joint and it's stuck like mine was, you may want to educate yourself on the use of heat to help break it free.
