Malthus states that a momentary increase in the death rate, from things such as disease or famine, have a beneficial effect on momentary living standards and raise the birth rate for a short time. In positive control scenarios like these he indicates his assurance of famine as something caused by the geometric birth rate and hints at the possibility that disease or decreased immune system function could also be something that arises due to overpopulation. He never states that positive checks like a meteor or a flash flood are due to overpopulation. (Although flash flooding can arise due to deforestation). I am glad that you included the criticism Marx brings up. That's the whole reason that I watched this video, but I think Marx's criticism should be responsible for standing on its own. It doesn't need pithy misquotations to poison the well for it.
