Lowell police officer Jason Diaz has been charged with one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, which is a 10-year felony, and one count of misconduct by a public official, a five-year felony, Attorney General Dana Nessel announced March 9, 2021. He also faces a two-year misdemeanor charge of careless discharge of a weapon causing injury. Diaz was employed by the Lowell Police Department at the time of the incident. Diaz was involved in a high-speed vehicle chase on Aug. 29, 2020, in Kent and Ionia counties when he allegedly shot a passenger in the head, according to a press release from Nessel’s office.
