People are often suspicious of new things. Europeans were introduced to tomatoes in the 1700 because they are native to the Americas. I thought there was something to do with the high acidity of tomatoes dissolving lead pots there were cooked in. Maybe people were observing symptoms of lead poisoning and blaming the tomatoes. They are inflammatory nightshades and if the first time a person is exposed to a new food is as an adult the body might respond poorly. Without knowing what their lives were really like back then and not having nutritional context it is hard to judge people.
