Enjoy Sunil Gavaskar dominating the ODI format in Australia during the 80s. Can he get any more casual with those bat raises?

Can watch the master bat all day long. Feel very unlucky for never seeing him play live 😕

Look at the 'bottom hand' shots! And that high elbow, straightness of bat and long front foot stride. Wow. Plays exactly like he preaches in commentary!

See the elegance with which Gavaskar played these shots. He changed his batting style from 1985 onwards and became an attacking batsman. During those times, it was not easy to drive the ball out of huge grounds like the Sydney and Melbourne Cricket Grounds are. But Sunny hit with ease, with power and elegance. In fact, since retiring from active playing in 1987, Gavaskar has donned multiple hats - Indian team coach, batting consultant, etc. It was he who helped Tendulkar improve his stance during his initial days! Gavaskar pointed out that when Sachin was ready to play, his bat came down from the third man side, whereas it should be straight and should come down directly from behind. He taught Sehwag also. Gavaskar was self-taught and improved all his shots through sheer practice and determination. God bless him.

Loved watching him bat in the 70s, him Zaheer Abbas and Viv Richards, made it look effortless.

Gavaskar under achieved in the ODIs. He was never a big fan of the shorter format of the game. But when he did, he played some fabulous innings, like the one against NZ in the WC ‘87.

His odi record
From 1974 - 1981
Matches - 22
Innings - 20
Runs - 394
Average - 20.73
SR - 52.32
100s/50s - 0/2

From 1982 - 1987
Matches - 86
Innings - 81
Runs - 2, 681

It took him a while to establish himself as an Odi player but he eventually did and finished with a decent Odi record
