I usually watch this movie on new years eve alone and everytime this scene gets to me.

Not "necessary" but, nevertheless, cinematically enrichening: close-ups of the middle aged woman bar worker (mixed emotions facial expression; she's obviously had a hard life and hopes for better things abead) and the bearded elderly man (he's "been there and done that" for scores of years and perhaps has gone a bit jaded in his old age) as the New Year rings in.

This movie would have been a great success even without small touches like these that Chaplin threw in, but those are the little nuggets you'll find in subsequent re-watches that you didn't notice the first time around. It's stuff like that that separates the *good* movies from the *great* ones.
