A Spider Inspired Solution to Sustainable Fashion | Turning Liquid Into Thread=The Future of Design?

In this video, we explore how the Oxford-based startup, Spintex, has has developed a process inspired by spiders, that produces a fine and tough silk-like thread without the use of harsh chemicals. They do it using a shear-sensitive protein gel and an innovative biomimetic spinning mechanism. By replicating the way spider spinnerets create fibers from liquid gel at room temperature, this process is 1,000 times more energy-efficient than creating plastic fibers, with water being the only by-product.

Love this example (and the others recently published through this series). In particular, a material like this, if it can deliver perfomance on par to spider silk, has potential applications well beyond clothing: reinforcing fibers for other materials, such as concrete and carbon fiber, road and bridge materials, automotive and aeronautic materials, and more. I look forward to seeing the process and material mature to the next TRL and eventually begin to replace extractives.

Although spider silk is strong, I feel that if I try to take off the outfit made of artificial silk it would just fall apart
