Making a Chamfer Plane - Mentori Kanna

Показать описание
Preparing for a shoji panels project, where I will need consistent chamfers on long pieces of wood, I made this plane inspired from the traditional japanese chamfer planes, mentori-kanna.

The plane is made from a 42 mm block plane I had in the shop, cut it shorter and skewed, then inserted into a wooden guide body with 45 degrees bevels. A small brass plate was added on the sole to prevent damaging the mouth since will deal with sharp edges when chamfering the wood.

The 45 degree body is made from two parts, the bevel done on a miter shooting board (probably this was the most critical job) and the second part, the rebates, that holds the little plane to slide in.
The body can be done also in a single part, but I wanted more freedom to control the fine tuning of the angles and sizes that was the reason I took this approach.

The skew of the blade built into the Kanna was a smooth touch!

modifying an inexpensive (small) kanna looks like a great project - slow and steady - and more cute little LV tools !!

I nearly fainted when you cut the Kanna into pieces! But its sacrafice was for a noble cause! Great build and very useful tool. Thanks for the link to the hardware, been looking for these for ages for other projects.

I have remade the design without making the plane skew, and a few small changes, and it warks great. Thanks for the inspiration.

I've had one of these on my wishlist of tools, but I might now just go and chop my cheapo-£15-off-Amazon kanna up and make one myself. As always, such amazing work.

Wow. I don't know what I just watched. Well I understood a little as I am a beginning wood worker. This was just so relaxing. Thank you.

Great work! I wonder why those 46 thumbs down...haters with a squalid life?
