Watching her crawl off the bed trying to get away to get space and air yet ultimately being consumed by the group and giving in is exactly how my panic attacks feel. Great acting in this scene. Very realistic and raw.

Every time I watch this scene, I think, "THIS is what I wanted from group therapy, not sitting around talking about stuff."

I really like the subtle change at the very end where Dani stops screaming at her own pace and starts mimicking the other woman when she starts screaming faster and at a higher pitch. The cult has encouraged her to show her emotions and validated them, but now there's that shift where she's forced to feel alongside them. It's really chilling.

This is one of the many reasons why both Midsommar and Joker were so highly praised that year. They both tap into this deep, hidden, almost primal sense of pain and set it free.

As a widow, who lost her husband at 32, I can say this is exactly how you feel. You wept, scream, and cry because nothing will change that your deceased loved one is gone but letting the emotion out is essential to get the pain out that’s within you. Very accurate representation of raw grief.

A lot of people don’t seem to get this scene and say they’re only manipulating her. Which they are! But there’s more to it than that. It’s not a cult with a leader, not everyone in it is malevolent, they are also brainwashed by their own belief, they are feeling her pain and empathizing and supporting her, even though it IS a manipulation tactic. Both can be true. This scene isn’t just people manipulating or comforting, it’s an act of worship, the moment at the end of the concert where the singer shares his story about his old drug addiction and offers you to share your pain and sin, to come forward. It’s both a preconceived, but it is also at the same time somehow genuine. That’s what’s so horrible about this movie, these people could’ve been anyone before the cult, you could become one of the cult. They want her to join them and they are manipulating her into evil and they love her. It’s so profound and also fucked up.

this scene is even more emotional when you compare it with the crying scene at the beginning when she screamed after the deaths and all you hear is her alone

I adore this scene so so much. The way they slowly get her to match her breathing to theirs, then follow her breathing, her screaming, her sobbing. Then it gets angrier and angrier, faster. For so much of the movie Dani is crying alone, and now she has women all around her, holding her, crying with her.

While this does look like an emotional if not beautifully empathetic moment, it's even more sad when you know that they are manipulating her. There's a video out there where an ex-cult member rates different cults scenes based on how accurately close they are related to how cults really work; he said how they drew her in was pretty accurate.

The cult in this movie is using Dani's vulnerable state to their advantage. Just like this moment, cults in real life draw you in by showering you with love to make you feel welcome and not want to leave them. Since Dani has never had someone understand or sympathize with her pain, she gave into the cult much more easily.

A cult deprogrammer broke down this scene for me:

Essentially what they're doing is officially transitioning her into becoming one of them.

On the surface it looks like they're just sharing a moment of vulnerability with her.

But if you look, you can see how manipulative it actually is:

First, they essentially engulf her, so she can't see anything but them.

When she starts to cry, they mimic her, as a means of showing they're with her in the moment.

But the longer the crying goes on, they stop copying her, and start to cry in a rhythm, until finally, it instead of them copying her, she's copying them, by crying in the same rhythm.

See how easy that was?

As crazy as it sounds it’s actually a sorta beautiful thing. These people genuinely want to share her pain with her so she doesn’t bare it alone, offering Dani a harmonious support system that she no longer has and probably never had.

I was feeling bad and decided to watch this scene because somehow it reflects the pain and agony that I have kept inside for so long.

I seriously want to scream and cry like this when things become too difficult to support.
It feels like i can be relieve somehow. It's weird.
