The New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) was formed in 1876 and has about 74,000 members.
There are about 182,000 lawyers in New York.
There’s no limit on how many times you can take the New York bar exam.
The New York Bar Exam is administered by the New York State Board of Law Examiners.
Upcoming dates for the NY bar exam in 2023 are: February 21-22, 2023 and July 25-26, 2023.
The pass rate for the New York bar exam in July 2022 was 66% overall, 75% for first-time takers and 23% for repeat takers.
New York is one of 40+ jurisdictions that adopted the Uniform Bar Examination for their state bar review. New York first administered the UBE in 2016.
NY bar exam test sites for 2023 are located in Albany, Buffalo, NYC and Long Island.
The bar exam is usually held twice a year, in February and July.
The UBE is comprised of three parts: the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE), the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT).
On the first day of the bar exam you have 3 hours in the morning to complete the MPT and 3 hours in the afternoon for the MEE.
On the second day of the bar exam you have 6 hours to complete the MBE, the multiple choice portion of the bar exam.
In 2020, the New York Bar Exam was administered online due to COVID-19.
The New York State Board of Law Examiners determines the minimum passing score, which is typically 266 out of 400 points.
The New York bar exam application fee for most takers is $250. Foreign applicants have to pay $750.
The application cost for UBE score transfer applicants is $250. The NCBE charges $25 for each UBE score transcript.
If you want to take the bar exam in February, you should submit your bar exam application in November. If you want to take the July bar exam, you should submit your application in April.
In addition to passing the New York bar exam with a score of at least 266, there are several requirements that must be met in order to be admitted as an attorney in New York.
To become an attorney in New York you must also score 85 or higher on the MPRE within the accepted time frame.
Complete an online course called the New York Law Course (NYLC) and pass an online test called the New York Law Exam (NYLE).
Complete 50 hours of qualifying pro bono service.
Satisfy the skills competency and character and fitness requirements.
New York has reciprocity agreements with many other states, allowing lawyers from those states to become licensed in New York without taking the bar exam.
In order to take the NY bar exam, you need to bring with you an official government issued photo ID (U.S. driver’s license or passport) and your seat ticket.
Items you can bring with you to the bar exam include: No. 2 pencils and erasers, blue or black ink pens, cash, keys, foam earplugs, feminine hygiene products, medications and a 1-liter drink in a clear, disposable, label-free, resealable plastic container.
Items you cannot bring with you to the bar exam include: bags, cell phones, notes, electronic devices, tissues, books, mechanical pencils, highlighters, flip flops and briefcases.
