How Arteta ADAPTED Arsenal to OUTSMART Ange: Spurs 0-1 Arsenal Tactical Analysis

Following on from the North London Derby, in which Arsenal ran out 0-1 winners, today's video examines the tactics of the battle between Mikel Arteta and Ange Postecoglou, revealing just how the Gunners were able to defeat Spurs. Today's tactical analysis includes:

Arteta's out-of-possession approach and how it stifled Tottenham Hotspurs' central progression, with Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard blocking access into Rodrigo Bentancur; Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli man-marking Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro; Jorginho and Thomas Partey managing Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison, and much more.

Arsenal looked to jump aggressively when they could still, with Micky Van de Ven often a trigger. Aside from that, the Gunners were happy to sit deeper, and allow Spurs to pass into Heung Min-Son and Brennan Johnson. There were moments of promise through Dominic Solanke, but Gabriel Magalhaes, William Saliba, Ben White, David Raya, and Jurrien Timber were imperious once again.

But, the most interesting and pivotal part of the game from the point of view of Arsenal's tactics, was Mikel Arteta's decision to switch dynamics, playing a double pivot of Jorginho and Partey, a dual false 9 pairing of Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard, and giving Jurrien Timber a much freer role from left-back.

Arsenal's new found shape created a lot of joy, even without the likes of captain, Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice, Mikel Merino, Riccardo Calafiori, Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Gabriel Magalhaes headed in the winner from a Bukayo Saka corner, pushing away Cristian Romero and thumping it past Vicario.

Ethan Nwaneri, Gabriel Jesus, and Raheem Sterling all made cameos off the bench, to help Arsenal secure their 3rd straight win in a row away to Tottenham Hotspur, and take them up to second in the 2024/25 Premier League table.

Arsenal fly to Italy to take on Gasperini's Atalanta in the first match day of the 2024/25 UEFA Champions League. On sunday, AFC go to the Etihad, for a crunch match at the top of the table against Manchester City.

This channel covers the entire Premier League, including Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, Liverpool, Arne Slot, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Enzo Maresca, Manchester United, Eric ten Hag, Newcastle United, Eddie Howe, the Champions League, Europa League, and much more!

We didnt "park the bus". We temporarily "park the Rolls Royce" and rode it out with precision when needed. Havertz, Martnelli and Saka did outstanding job from the front to help our ever-strong defensive unit to do their job. I absolutely loved every minute of the game. So proud of my team, Arsenal. COYG

Amazing as always harvey, genuinely happy to see Arteta utilize Havertz for yet another role, almost making up the fact that ode is missing

Top vid Harvey, what a performance!

I found the narrative by rivals & the media quite hilarious, Arsenal just “park the bus”, were so good OOP people are becoming confused with our tactical approaches we can transition from a low block to high man 2 man press within 20 minutes of the same game.

Many times we switched from a low block to a man 2 man, with Jorginho jumping on bentancur & saliba stepping into midfield, we left 3 vs 3 in our back line that’s not what I call defensive!

Another scenario is when we were pressing Vicario high, we left bentancur free in build up.

Ultimately it’s a masterclass by arteta he had spurs exactly where we wanted, we controlled the game without the ball.

Timber seemed much for suited to a traditional fullback role of the left, & as we mentioned in the preview the 4-2-4 or times 2-3-3-2 worked perfectly with the dual false 9s.

Something I could see us using against city(Jesus x Havertz)city have struggled against these dynamics before with the likes of Toney x wissa, with one dropping & the other running beyond but I’m sure we’ll get into it.

Great vid, COYG!

really appreciate how you are able to go in depth and deliver such detailed analysis without feeling the need to include the usual tactical jargon that we see and hear so much of nowadays, keep up the good work mate

I love watching good analysis and having moments broken down in frames that can be hard to pick up during a live watch. Havertz just seems so in tune with whatever the team needs, and he and Trossard worked better together I expected. I think that’s based on maybe some below-par appearances from Trossard at left 8 when we played a slightly more structured 433 at times last season? Not sure. Timber and Martinelli were relentless on that left side in defense, and the three of them (Martinelli, Timber, and Trossard) seemed a decent combination!

Always love your clear, objective but also insightful analysis. I honestly didn't realize how much Jorginho did during the game and found myself sometimes frustrated with him but now have a different opinion on what he was actually doing. Great stuff great content mate.

Brilliant as ever, really energised by the quality of the squad players, Leo, little Gabi and timber. It’s beginning to feel like a 23 man squad ❤

I think Trossard's passing ability is very underrated. I was really impressed with him playing inside on Sunday.

Hey Harvey, great video! I wanted to ask if you shared any concerns about how poor our double pivot seemed, especially in possession (J20 AND TP5 only completely 2 passes to each other), and how we should set up for Atalanta.

Also, White vs Son didn't look too good when Saka wasn't helping, is that a concern when we play the likes of Lookman, Doku and Savio next?
