Virgin Galactic launch first commercial spaceflight

Virgin Galactic is due to send its first commercial flight into space.

The spaceflight, dubbed the Galactic 01 by Sir Richard Branson's private space tourism company, will carry three crew members from the Italian Air Force and National Research Council of Italy along with an astronaut instructor from Virgin Galactic.

The 90-minute flight will be suborbital, which means it will reach the edge of space without going into orbit.

If this flight is successful, Sir Richard Branson's private space tourism company hopes to send tourists to space monthly from August.

I live 50 miles away....this is a beautiful bird...reminds me of the Space Shuttle, which I loved so much and which I saw flying over Las Cruces on the way to retirement in CA...On top of the 747...I miss them BOTH, but this ship is fantastic!!~

If they can squeeze out more thrust (in the future) and go 20% higher (10 more miles up), the can cross the Karman line and actually go into space. But it is still cool to be close to the low edge of space. The 50 mile up Astronaut rating is hokey. Kind of like a earned vs honorary PHD. People how go above 62 miles should be real earned Astronauts and people who only go up 50 (like in this video) miles should just be honorary.

While a great feet of engineering no doubt, this adds absolutely nothing to space exploration. It is the same as the Concorde was to public aviation (only this time for the even wealthier). Let's hope it does not meet the same fate.
