If you build PowerPoints for work, you should definitely be using AI. But not in the way you might think.

There’s a lot of tools out there right now that make building a presentation really easy, but they tend to just give you mediocre, image-heavy presentations that might be great for a college student, but aren’t realistic for a corporate environment. These tools will get there eventually, but they’re not there yet.

In the meantime, focus on using AI for these three things:

The first is generating structured content. When you want to build a presentation, give it your main message, then ask it to break that message down using the Pyramid Principle. Then use each of the points it gives you as your slide titles. This will give you a structure that you can use to build out a deck that’s clear and easy to follow.

The next thing you should be using it for is research. Tell it your slide titles and ask it to provide you with data that supports those slide titles. Make sure to ask for sources, and then dig through those sources to pull out useful information. Or better yet, upload full documents and ask for a bullet point summary.

Then lastly, use it to get feedback on your presentation. Some tools let you upload your presentation, so you can ask specific questions, like whether or not the presentation would be easy to understand for someone not in your industry. But even if you can’t upload, use AI to analyze specific sections of your presentation, or give you a better way to word something.

Focus on these three things, and you’ll see a big jump in the quality of your presentations.
