Ever wondered how we got our nickname #TropicLightning?

On Nov. 25, 1942, the #25thInfantryDivision was ordered to the island of #Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands to seize the island from the remaining Japanese forces. Prior to the Division going on the offensive, The U.S. Marine Corps had gained valuable ground and had been staunchly defending against fierce Japanese counterattacks. By January 1943, the offensive operation began in earnest... with the mission of attacking, seizing the objective, and gaining full control of the island.

By February 1943, U.S. Forces to include Division Soldiers approached from the south and east, capturing the town of Tenaro at Cape Esperance, marking the end of organized Japanese resistance on the island. Because of the unprecedented speed at which the Division successfully completed its mission, it earned the Tropic Lightning nickname!

That was then Major Charles Davis (Retired as a Colonel) earning his medal of honor for his action as a Captain on Hill 53 against a Japanese bunker holding the advance on the 25th.
John Cusack's character Captain Gaff in "The Thin Red Line" and his action against the Japanese bunker was heavily based on Davis.
