My favorite is Spider-Man 2 but it’s not untouchable, I’ve only seen Spiderverse once and I really liked it so it could very easily take the top spot whenever I get around to rewatching it.

Granted, I haven’t seen TASM2, so who knows. Maybe it’ll just KNOCK MY SOCKS OFF. Maybe Paul Giamatti doing a terrible Russian accent will BLOW MY MIND.

This was excellent, gentlemen! Similar to with your thoughts on Bride of Frankenstein where I originally thought it was a 10/10, you made me reconsider my high praise of Spider-man 2 because you're right on all your criticisms; however, my basis for what's the best movie is choosing a movie that I think best uplifts the majority of people to the true, the good, and the beautiful, so while I may have overrated Spider-man 2, I think it still wins out as the best Spider-man film on that end (although, Into the Spider-verse amazing animation does fit that category for me in pushing limits for artistic inspiration), but for accuracy, the car thief scene in the Amazing Spider-man 1 is the most accurate Spider-man scene and I think The Amazing Spider-man 2 was the overall most accurate characterization, but in hearing Dan talk about Spider-man 1, that might be the most true to the sprit of the Spider-man story.

Although, even though accuracy to source material is appreciated, I don't think being more accurate makes something better since I think 90s Spider-man TAS is the most accurate adaptation to the spirit of Spider-man overall, but the Spectacular Spider-man cartoon is better than Spider-man TAS...also, has the most accurate to the spirit and *breaks out in song* it's simply the best Mary Jane.

And while I think there are higher peaks in characterization in the original source material continuity, I might prefer Ultimate Spider-man comic continuity because it's a self-contained run that kept the integrity of Spider-man in tact with him going out as a hero as opposed to whatever Marvel is doing with Spider-man right now...I thought Spider-man's story should have concluded in the 90s with Peter and Mary Jane raising their daughter while Ben Reilly took over for awhile.

Oh, and I agreed with you regarding the villains in Spider-man TAS, not really caring for them as much as for the dramatic tension with Peter and his supporting cast. Okay, back to the movies! haha

Character-wise, I thought Gwen, Uncle Ben, and Aunt May rocked in The Amazing Spider-man, but even though I appreciated how detailed they got developing Peter from an action standpoint (loved him developing his webs and best Spider-man movement ever! I loved when he crawled on the Lizard!), and making him a more believable nerd, I think the lack of responsibility, especially with his relationship with his Aunt May and giving away his identity so many times, prevented me from seeing his characterization come together like Tobey Maguire Spider-man despite Tobey Spider-man being more cartoony but his cartoony characterization worked well relative to the cartoony tone of the Raimi films even though I'm with you on not finding him relatable, and preferring Andrew Garfield's performance. I've never seen all of Pleasantville, but Tobey Maguire in Brothers was great!

Regarding people saying Andrew Garfield's Spider-man was too cool, I think that gives some interesting insight on the people saying that, since I think Garfield's Spider-man was a realistic nerd and I didn't find him cool.

I was so happy to see you return with another top 10 ranking so soon, and with another great surprise guest!

Not sure how I'd rank the Rami, Webb, and Spider-man Into the Spider-verse movies now, but I liked them all. All 6 Spider-man movies...unless Venom counts, then all 7 Spider-man movies...but it doesn't so all 6 Spider-man movies...

That "Everything!" line in Spider-man 3 when Spider-man is fighting Sandman was so good.

Keep up the great work, DJ. Hope you have a great rest of your week.

Great discussion, guys! I’ve always liked Spider-Man as a movie character, and I’ve only read a few comics here and there, so it was insightful to hear Dan’s expertise on the material as well as cool to have DJ’s change in perspective as he’s gotten older. Many of these movies I’ve only ever seen once, The Amazing Spider-Man being a movie I barely remember, so if I had to do a ranking, mine would look like:
1.) Spider-Man 2 (2004)
2.) Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
3.) Spider-Man (2002)
4.) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
5.) Spider-Man: Far from Home (2019)
6.) Spider-Man 3 (2007)
7.) The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
8.) The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
9.) Spider-Meme: No Stal Gia (2021)

I think I’m in the minority because after re-watching the Tobey series I gotta say I actually prefer Spider-Man (2002) over Spider-Man 2 (2004). It’s probably because I’m a sucker for origin stories and I also think that Green Goblin’s motives are fleshed out a bit better than Doc Ock’s. Plus there’s a bunch of comedic scenes in 2 that feel completely out of place, almost like the editor put scenes out of order or something

Really enjoyed this ranking. Awesome job guys 🤘🏻

My ranking:

9. Spider-Man 3
8. Amazing Spider-Man 2
7. The Amazing Spider-Man
6. Far From Home
5. No Way Home
4. Spider-Man 2

3. Homecoming
2. Spider-Man
1. Into the Spiderverse

I think the first three are the only ones that work the majority of the time. Everything after that is various degrees of flawed films. Only the bottom two are genuinely bad, but none of them are particularly good.

Wow, kind of surprised that you guys didn't like No Way Home given it's success. Ya'll are very particular, but I love it lol!

Amazing, Ultimate, Web of...so stoked for this, especially since Spider-man is both your favorite superhero. So far, I think I've had similar takes as you DJ, but Spider-man movies was the exception so I'm really curious what you think because I thought Spider-man 2 was in the top 3 superhero movies:

1. The Incredibles
2. Spider-man 2
3. Batman Begins

And...The Amazing Spider-man 2 might have been my favorite Spider-man movie but...that might change after hearing your thoughts. You rock DJ!

Before getting to my personal ranking, I want to make clear that I don't think we have gotten a definitive/"perfect" Spider-Man movie yet and I consider only the bottom three outright bad movies (and even then, only the bottom two I wouldn't want to watch again).

1. Spider-Man 2
Very flawed, with MJ being a terribly written character and the whole "Peter losing his confidence also makes him lose his powers" thing doesn't make much sense. On the other hand, this movie captures the major themes of Spider-Man the best out of all these movies, especially the classic struggle of him trying to choose between the easy, but selfish route and the hard, but responsible one, Alfred Molina gives a career highlight performance as arguably still the best villain of these movies and Raimi, who I consider one of my all-time personal favorite directors, is really giving his A-game, in terms of the camerawork.

2. Homecoming
Nice down-to-Earth story, with mostly street level - stakes. I love the lighthearted High-School comedy vibe, Tom Holland is in my opinion the best live-action Spider-Man and the Vulture is real neck-and-neck with Dock Ock as the best villain. I could easily give this the number one spot, especially since it has lesser lows than SM2, but I feel that the highs of SM2 are slightly higher to balance that out.

3. Spider-Man
Some elements (mostly the early CG-effects) haven't aged the best and Green Goblin is script-wise kinda a mess (as Captain Logan likes to point out, after killing OsCorp's board of directors, he doesn't seem to have any actual goal/motivation), but the retelling of Spider-Man's origin is one of the best ones, this set the standard for superhero origin movies in general for years and Dafoe's performance makes you forget flaws of the writing.

4. No Way Home
Didn't need nor wanted to see a live-action Spider-Verse movie, people's Raimi nostalgia stroked or anything from the two TASM movies revisited, so that was a strike against this movie from the outset for me, before even seeing it. As for the finished movie itself, the writing is messy (sci-fi/fantasy stories admittedly rarely make 100% airtight sense anyway, but even by those standards it would be easy to poke holes to this movie) and the CGI was clearly rushed in a lot of places, but I would be lying, if I said I didn't have good time watching this, even during my recent rewatch. This movie made Peter/Michelle my favorite couple from these movies, Dafoe and Molina slipped right back to their roles like nothing, the interactions between various characters were fun and Michael Giacchino, who already did a stellar job with the scores of the previous two movies, was just on fire here. The internet hype of this being "the best Spider-Man movie" is ridiculous and I still would take that "Kraven hunting outed Peter" movie, that the writers originally pitched, over this one, but this is an enjoyable ride, if you can forgive the flaws.

5. Into the Spider-Verse
I'm sorry, I know everybody loves this movie and ranks it as the best Spider-Man movie, if not the best Marvel movie period, but I think it's a tiny bit overrated. The visuals, Miles' characters-arc, soundtrack and voice acting are amazing, but I do not like "Spider-Verse" as a concept or how the ending stakes were "we have to save the whole multiverse!" (hated these things in NWH too, just to be clear), because both things are just too big for Spider-Man, and most of the Spider-People were kinda just one-note gags. Personal nitpick, but wasn't really crazy about Green Goblin's or Kingpin's character designs either. Those things don't make me forget the good parts or anything, but kinda stop me from seeing this as the best Spider-Man story.

6. Far From Home
Has trouble being both an epilogue to the Infinity Saga and sequel to the Homecoming, but the main cast is still compelling, the fun tone from Homecoming is still there and all the scenes with Mysterio are great, especially that big illusion mind game scene, which instantly became one of the most iconic action set pieces of these movies.

7. Spider-Man 3
A mess, but entertaining enough that, if I'm rewatching the first two Raimi movies, I'll watch this after them too.

8. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Also a mess, but not a fun kind. Just an embarrassing feature-length trailer for a failed cinematic universe, with really cringy performances from the two villains and bad writing just all around.

9. The Amazing Spider-Man
Super generic, tries too hard to be more "grounded and serious" take, while still having ton of hokey moments, the Lizard is easily the lamest villain out of all of these movies, the Spider-Man costume is butt-ugly and Peter Parker has never been more unlikeable (at least in terms of movies).

Sorry for the very scattered thoughts

Only ranking the live action films. I have very mixed feelings about Into The Spiderverse. I think it accomplishes what it sets out to do but it’s animation while beautiful at times is incredibly off putting to me with its weird frame rate. I’m very biased toward the Raimi films because I gravitate towards him as an auteur. I think his sensibilities technically and stylistically connect the most to me. I’m also biased negatively against the MCU stuff. Even if I like some ideas in the Holland films I can’t get past how flat and poorly lit they are. I never sense an actual filmmaker behind the scenes. I feel like I’m watching a Verizon wireless commercial starring Spider-Man and not even really the kind of Spider-Man I like. I think Spider-Man 3 is criminally underrated and everything about it people call messy works for me thematically and narratively fits together neatly. The Webb films I’m mixed on but even the worst parts of Amazing Spider-Man 2 are at least enjoyable ironically.

I know Homecoming is really low for me and that might rub people the wrong way but besides the technical and visual quality shortcomings I already pointed out I just can’t get behind this version of Spider-Man. They literally made the villain a working class father trying to provide for his family and our protagonist is directly getting his tech from a narcissistic billionaire weapon contractor. Usually what a film is saying doesn’t bother me if it’s executed well but when there’s nothing to latch onto in terms of direction all that’s left is the terrible themes. Every character arc Holland’s Spider-Man supposedly has is reset multiple times and he does it again and again until finally it’s back to the status quo. This mistake starts here and they never improve from it. It never feels to me like the John Hughes movie it’s trying to be. Maybe it’ll grow on me one day.

To touch on the Sam Raimi films again I forgot to mention the relationship drama, which I think is honestly some of the strongest stuff. I’ve never agreed with people who think Mary Jane is poorly written in those films. She’s a significantly more well rounded character with dreams and motivations compared to Zendaya in the MCU films. She comes across much more like a real woman to me. I think the films are going for more of a Shakespearean quality when it comes to the drama. They’re big and grand. Yes it’s kinda soap opera like but it’s so much more intense in its melodrama as not to feel hokey to me. Any of the campiness is well balanced with the emotionally grounded elements. I don’t think any of the other films strike that balance like that. You guys acted like Spider-Man 3 obviously is near the bottom as if that’s like a given now but in the last like 5 years or so there’s been plenty of think pieces, re-reviews, and video essays all praising the movie as misunderstood.

1. Spider-Man 2
2. Spider-Man 3
3. Spider-Man
4. Amazing Spider-Man 1
5. Amazing Spider-Man 2
6. Far From Home
7. Homecoming
8. No Way Home
