The Greenest Building is One that Already Exists

People are drawn to old buildings. They provide meaningful connections to the past, and add character to places in which we want to live and work. They also have great potential for adaptation.
This is all good news for the many cinemas housed in historic, or just older, buildings. However, due to the difficulties and expenses of navigating planning policy (particularly, listed building status), much of the focus in cutting carbon emissions seems to be on new builds, which have massive impact due to embodied and life cycle carbon.

This session makes the case for investing in existing buildings and structures, as well as providing some facts, inspiration, hands-on advice, and practical examples of where venues might start to do this.

PANEL MEMBERS:
Wendy Cook (Head of Cinema, Hyde Park Picture House), Claire Horrocks (Programmer, Exeter Phoenix)

CURATOR & CHAIR:
Zoe Rasbash (Environmental Emergencies Action Researcher, Watershed)
