At 4:44 is the picture of the Bisbee, AZ open pit copper mine. I recognized it from the road turn off at the pit edge. I also knew it by the local landscape. Since you are going to use the pic I will tell folks about Bisbee. There use to be a forest in the mile high mountains around Bisbee until they cut them all down for housing and mine timbers. In downtown Bisbee, there is a Smithsonian museum which is very cool. Also a Queen mine tour where you get to strap on mine gear and go for a mine car ride. When the mine shut down, the cheap housing and store front became the mecca for an art community. I highly recommend a visit to Bisbee and Tombstone which is just northwest of Bisbee. Another reason I know this pic is because both of my parents are from Bisbee and I have lots of relatives that we visited during the summer as kids. The mountains in the very back is Mexico. Thanks for including the pic.

I can see the Bingham Canyon Mine from my house. It is hard to put into words how massive an operation it is. Visiting it you can look down to the bottom and the enormous mining trucks look like little toys. The scale just defies comprehension. It's visible from the entire city. There used to be a mountain there and now it's just a gargantuan hole surrounded by the tailings piles. It's extremely impressive. As for the landslide, they had been very carefully monitoring the hillside with lasers and seismic instruments for months and were able to make sure the mine was empty when it collapsed. Then they spent 2 years digging it all out and got back to work mining.

Thanks for these informations.
Please, if you also include metric measurements, a large part of your audience will understand better.

Mining is incredible imo. It's incredible engineering. I found the Chilean copper mine incredible. 10, 000ft up and in the middle of a desert!

I used to live in West Jordan, Utah. On some weekends my best friend and I would pile our kids into my truck and we'd drive up the back side canyon just south of the mine. It's the highest point and the view from there is amazing! Sometimes we'd camp near there other times we'd drive into Tooele and get ice cream before driving back home to West Jordan. That particular canyon is closed during winter.

Fun fact: the rock slide at the Kennecott mine took out the visitors center.
It was actually kind of cool, it overhung the mine so you could look out and have the best view you could imagine.
They decided not to build a new visitors center.. which is probably for the best.

This Aussie had no idea we had the largest lithium mine!

Production “exploded”… good word choice there. 😁

I've been to the MIR mine in Russia.... Quite a big hole, bigger than it looks like in the video.... You have to see it to believe it

Another large mining operation is the Mount Isa mine in northern Australia. It contains copper, lead, and zinc and was reported to have been found by a stockman looking for a horse that had run off and he recognized the green stones on the ground as copper-bearing rock. During World War 2 American engineers were sent to the mine to increase production for the war effort. They ringed the mine with airfields to protect it from a Japanese attack.

When they say asteroid mining is way too hard and expensive, I always think about these on this list.
Some of these are harder to build than catching an asteroid. We have enough money and resources, it is “only” matter of profit.

Great video, but for God's sake use the metric system !!! It's ridiculous to use stone, ounces and stuff that doesn't even make sense!

Indonesia is truly a god-given land, whatever the country has, even the largest nickel and gas reserves potential in the world, not to mention palm oil and a huge fishery, their gold mine reserves are very large on the island of Papua and sulawesi if on the island of Java they have huge gold reserves but their citizens refuse because this land is full of inhabitants and the latest they will build their own nuclear reactors with the help of russia, their coal and uranium mines are huge especially on the island of kalali Maluku and Halmahera
