I always did foal imprinting first day. This was done daily for a week and also spending time playing with them. Trailer loading was done second week.

You're a good Trainer and momma's body language shows she trusts you with her baby.

When I was young I worked for a time at two different horse farms. One they started at birth with the foals wearing light halters and getting used to lead ropes when going with their moms to the pastures. We groomed them every day and checked their hooves so they were used to humans right away.

The other we did not get to use halters or lead ropes on them. They only knew us as people who cleaned out the stalls, put in feed and water, never touched them . This was all due to the foreman. When we took the mares out to the pasture the babies followed behind her.

When it came time for their registration pictures it was a damned dangerous time for both us and the foals because they didn't understand what we were doing to them. I almost ended up with a shattered shoulder because the panicked foal didn't know what a halter was. It took all day to photograph 10 foals. The first farm we had almost double that number and it took less than 2 hours.

That is so cute. I taught my friends filly how to give hoofes and wear a halter when I was a teenager. The little lady hated anything touching her face for her first 6 months, so it was a process. The biggest problem with lifting her feet was that she didn't figure out balance until she was 4 months

When my baby donkey was born I worked with her for a few minutes a couple times a day to get her used to being touched all over, hooves picked up, teeth brushed, sprayed, feet washed with a hose, led a few feet, everything we did to her mom and the other horses. I was her second mom. Such a sweet little girl.

My first horse we foaled. We had a halter and blankets on her by the time she was 6 months old. I was about 5 years and I climbed on to the fence and she came right up to me. I hung on to her neck and swung myself up and over and we walked around the pen.

My Daddy beat my butt red when caught me but that was the most amazing time of my life. I ended up doing this several more times.
When she was old enough to be broke my dad put a saddle on her and just rode. She never bucked or spooked. My Dad said I took all the fun out of it 😂 he was a saddle bronc rider.

When she was born, she used to lay her head in my lap, and when she was too big for that, she would kneel down for me to climb up. She was my first love and heartbreak.

universal animal rearing wisdom. Thank you kindly, I’m going to apply this to all the farm animals, always wondered why they weren’t docile like everyone else’s, now I know.

Thank you for haveing this channel. I just came accross ya. And as for this video and working with a ful, It's why if yall got the choice, if you buy a horse, buy it as young as possible, every chance you get, spend time with it. Horses and donkeys are very personable, and if you don't take the time, it will be difficult. Don't go looking for a horse ^pretrained^ that don't exist, and if you never worked with horse's, don't get one unless you plan to keep it at a stable where they can teach you how to work with your horse. Allot of stables have people they pay to teach beginners.

I mean I am gonna be honest… I just hung out with the baby after the first week. Did things slowly. She leads, picks up all four feet, loads in a trailer at 6 months old. But I didn’t force a single thing on her 🤷‍♀️ no imprinting either. Just took things slow and let her be comfortable with me first.

I understand why some people chose to imprint but for me personally there’s no better feeling in the world than an “wild” horse choosing to trust you and allowing you to work with them. It’s why I prefer working with mustangs, it’s so much easier to start with a blank slate than try to fix someone else’s mistakes in training.
