Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be exploring The Boogeyman, the 2023 supernatural horror directed by Rob Savage, based on the 1973 short story by Stephen King.

While the short story focused on a disturbing conversation between a psychiatrist called Dr. Harper and Lester Billings, a new client claiming that his three children were murdered by an entity they called the Boogeyman, the film effectively picks up after those events.

Starring Chris Messina, David Dastmalchian, Sophie Thatcher, Vivien Lyra Blair, Marin Ireland and LisaGay Hamilton, the movie revolves around the Harpers, who are still grappling with the recent Death of their Matriarch Cara, killed in a car accident.

The trauma that begins separating them and Lesters fear and belief in the Boogeyman begin serving as a gateway for the dark malignant force that begins hounding them. The Harpers must either confront the being head on, or it will feed on their misery and potentially consume them all.

In this video, we’re going to explore the short story, the film which follows directly after, in addition to the entity and ending of the narrative.

This is why Stephen King is one of the best authors he can expertly take a folktale, or a simple, scary story and elevate it to new heights and put ideas in your stories, and make you wonder if there’s even a supernatural elements at all but then that questioning it self builds up to the super natural element and vice versa they both build on each other so well

David Dastmalchian is so good at playing weird traumatized guys. I love him.

Moral of the story:
*"To have children is a privilege compassionate adults can enjoy. Nurture and love them with all your soul. Or I shall come and devour them whole."*

Ah the '70s ... when you could buy a house that size working at a hardware store.

Stephen King can be either a hit or miss, but this looks scary as hell 😁 I love it

I read King's Autobiography "On Writing" and he mentions at some point, that as a father he got very scared that he could get violent with his children. Because he would sometimes get exasperated with them or angry, maybe even hateful. (like if a kid is doing everything to keep up even though it has been bedtime forever). And he channeled it in writing very conflicted but violent men who end up being fathers, often not quite because they wanted it. Which gives us the Shining and many more, including this story. And I think it is very scary to deal with a life where you are trying to fulfill a role of a parent, protect and nurture your children while you feel unequipped to do so or maybe even feel like you don't want to do it. And that can be very destructive.
I get why the movie made the children protagonists, but I feel like in the original story the horror is greater, because the kids are the ones the bad stuff happens to, due to a negligent or loveless parent. Sure, kids standing up to their own fear and trauma is a good thing when coupled with therapy, but I feel like the message of the original gets kinda lost, with the parent being the one who should own up and protect their children no matter how hard it can be.

In my personal opinion:
The first half of the movie was great with setting up a backstory and the menacing villain entity. However, by the second half where we are seeing the monster and the main characters are aware of its weaknesses; they still manage to sit in dark rooms and just chill while the monster is quite literally watching them at all times. Just a big face palm for me when they start to use light after being told and shown that the monster hates light, SEVERAL times before the big fight. The best they could do was christmas lights? Where was her phone? I must have missed that lol just blows me away when it gets written this way. They learned all the basics about the monster and use none of it. Hilarious.(also no one hangs out with their bully who makes fun of their dead mom)

David Dasmalchian is everywhere now, and I couldn't be happier, he's one of my favourite actors these days.

It was nice to see a good horror movie in theaters, I feel like there hasn't been a good one in awhile that isn't the same old possession or conjuring movie

David Dastmalchian is woefully under used in this film, as is the idea that the creature can shapeshift - why not have the boogeyman show up as Billings, or a car-crash-wounded version of the mother? the idea of splitting the therapy plus the stories of Harper's family and Lester's would have been perfect.

If you think about it the psychiatrist is still the boogeyman but only towards his family. His inability to grieve and listen to his daughters indirectly attracted the monster to them.

this adaptation of the boogeyman reminded me very heavily of a skinwalker, with the mimicking of voices. that was easily one of the scariest aspects of the monster

One of my nieces told me this story years ago. In the 90's. I really wasn't into horror movies back then because I'd get bad nightmares. The story freaked me out for years and made me very paranoid. However, it does seem like a great movie. I'd watch it now, especially since I'm way older now lol.

Kinda curious about Lester's actor as to why they didnt make him sort of a villain/ boogeyman itself cause I mean he is perfect for the role with that unnerving expression which get progressively creepier when plays the villain/anti-hero.
He was the joker proxy in gotham as well.

The 05 version had 12 yr old me, it was an awesome watch that had my tween butt on the edge of my seat. Can't wait to watch this one, didn't even know it was out 😅

this actually really reminds me of The Babadook as well, being a tulpa relying on parents not believing/neglecting their kids’ fear

This was such a good movie and I plan to see it again. The end was pretty cool, Sadie hears the Boogeyman mimicking Dr. Weller's voice calling to her. She sees the closet door open a bit with a hanger moving. She's about to open it when Dr. Weller's comes out of the opposite room and asks want Sadie what does she want. Damn that was such a good scene. It was short but David Dastmalchian was really good, and would of liked to see more of him then what was given. Maybe we'll get a prequel focusing on his family? His also in the upcoming The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which I am also excited to see.

It's a great short story. Not openly showing the monster in the short story, it bids the question : "Can we trust his word? Can we really believe what he says?". Lester is clearly mentally disturbed, so what do we do? Did he kill his children? Or did something else kill his children?

Not being able to protect your own child is a different kind of horror.
