8 Reasons Why You Should Not Get a Cocker Spaniel

A hunting dog whose origin dates back to the 14th century, Cocker Spaniel is the smallest member of the American Kennel Club’s sporting group. While they were originally used in hunting and sport, today, these dogs are popular family companions. However, this breed is not for everyone - they need a home where their needs are met in order for them to maximize their potential and be their best. So, if you’re wondering whether this breed is, or is not, the right one for you, make sure to watch until the end because we’ll talk about the 8 reasons why you should not get a Cocker Spaniel!

When it comes to flushing games, Cocker Spaniels are perhaps one of the best. As a matter of fact, the “cocker” in their name represents their expertise in flushing woodcock. While they are not often used for the same purpose anymore, these dogs are still hunters at heart, which means that they are the happiest in a home where their bodies are kept busy, and minds challenged. Towards their families, these dogs are loyal, sweet, and eager to please. Later on, we’ll get to know more about these wonderful dogs!

Hi fellow dog lover!🐶 My dog Billie had so many behavior problems… she was jumping, peeing inappropriately, overly aggressive, pulling on the leash… she was just crazy…🤪 Then I found this one solution that stopped all the problems!🙌 The sad fact was…The training I first tried with my dog was a complete fai...lure.😔 I went through the average cookie-cutter training programs. These programs used outdated and ‘mean’ dominance techniques. It turns out those programs had no qualifications and were developed by complete phonies.😱 So this is what I did to stop my dog’s behavior problems... In a few simple words… I discovered my dog’s hidden intelligence!🧠

Let me explain… In my years as a dog owner…this is the one big lesson I have learned. More intelligent dogs are better behaved.👍 A more intelligent dog takes commands easier…and understands what you need from them. What I found out was… No matter how clever I thought my dog was. I could still unlock my dog’s hidden intelligence quickly and easily!😄 Don’t waste a second longer putting up with your dog's behavior problem! I’ll explain everything you need to know in the link!😁

At 82 I am on my 3rd Cocker Spaniel. My first at 9 yrs old, my second 20 years ago, who became my service dog for 17 yrs and I had to put him down 10 days before his 18th birthday. He was a seizure alert dog. After weeks of tears, I purchased another Cocker Spaniel at 8 weeks of age. He is now 11 months and a great friend. He is a Wonderful beautiful dog. like my other Cockers, he is very smart and learns quickly. He is equally happy playing ball or watching TV. He has his favorite commercials and comes racing into the room to watch them. It is hysterical. I pray God gives me many years with him.

Number 1 is super accurate. If I ever felt sad Max would cry to comfort me. That’s something I never understood how he was capable of that but I was amazed

Oh man, I just love Cocker Spaniels—they’re so loyal and obedient. I had mine for 16 years, and they truly are one of the most charming dogs with their beautiful, silky fur. I still miss my Zoe… She passed away when I wasn’t with her, and the grief has stayed with me ever since

I had a cocker spaniel, a black one called "Vintén". They gave it to me when I turned 10 years old and we shared 12 years together until he passed away. Now I am 37 and I would love to have another one. I loved that dog and learned so much from him. Such a great pet. Funny, energetic, sweet. He loved playing and swimming.

I would say all of these things to the person/people who abandoned the sweet Cocker that I ended up rescuing. I won't go into all the details, but he had been abandoned and abused. He was already in the middle of his life so we only had seven years before cancer took him away, but he was so precious to me! He was beautiful, sweet and had great emotional intelligence. He passed AKC therapy dog classes near the end of his life. He was my first dog and a very memorable one. We weathered the scars of abuse on his psyche and he became confident and outgoing. We achieved house training in the middle of his life. Don't ever let someone tell you that an old dog can't learn! It does take some patience and understanding, including of health conditions. My second dog was also a Cocker--an unwanted one due to skin health problems. She was lovely. Both of these dear (purebred) dogs will be a part of me as long as I have memory. Just saying that to people who think rescues are mutts, no offense to mixed-breeds. I would just say to people, please don't overlook an older dog when adopting! They might enhance your own life in ways you can't imagine, or aren't prepared to think of. As an old animal rescuer, I can attest that they give more than you do.

You are spot on about Cocker Spaniels! I found an American Cocker at a local rescue place. She was five years old had been for three years with a family with nine children! She then was in a home that took her away from the first family. She was extremely overweight and had no training except to potty outdoors. She was totally a wild child…I named her Liberty and almost gave her back. She would piddle if anyone even looked at her and she had no manners what so ever and had never been socialized. The very first thing she learned was that I was alpha and she was not to go out the door until I went first. She actually learned sit, stay, down and not to eat until I said OK. She is close to eleven and is a happy-go-lucky puppy. You are so right about her appetite, she would eat anything that she thinks is human food. I believe she learned so quickly because she is so kind hearted and very, very smart. She is now leash trained and heels very well. Wish I had had her in her puppyhood.

I have always owned Cocker Spaniels, and they are the most loving dogs! My current Cocker is 10 months old and the smartest, sweetest, most beautiful dog! She is my furr-baby.

I rescued a 5 year old cocker spaniel who was locked up, neglected and abused. He naturally bit everyone. He walked into my home and never left and he is the sweetest dog. All he needed was to feel safe and deeply loved. My challenge is his territorial behavior, so I minimise that by creating a space that is just for him and other dogs can't enter, and i feed them separately, except for treats.

My assistance cocker spaniel, Raven, is the most giving girl ever. She's given me a new lease of life. I struggle with PTSD and was basically house bound when I got her nearly 4 months ago. When we are home and she's not working, she has all of these characteristics 😂 I use dog puzzles to keep her occupied while I eat, otherwise she'd be helping me clean my plate 😆

Like some before us, we just lost our best friend after 11 years. We got Buddy from the Frederick animal shelter when he was about 4. That put him at 15 at the end. Absolutely the best dog we have had over many years. A major issue of which we were not prepared was the continual problem with his ears. Surgical procedures were required as well as infection after infection. If you cannot afford a large medical account, yo probably should pass.
