When Do Black Americans Get Their Human Rights? | Commentary

For too long, the framework of civil rights has dominated conversations around the Black liberation struggle, a struggle which has more history beyond just the United States. By making the conditions of Black America an issue of civil rights, the issue remains a domestic issue - versus an issue of solidarity with oppressed, occupied and militarized communities around the world. In this second episode of a commentary series we are developing here at AJ+, Sana Saeed looks at the argument for internationalist solidarity.

It really has become an international movement for human rights everywhere and I think that’s a good thing. In the video, there was a picture of a BLM protest in Australia (easy to tell, because there were many Aboriginal flags). Our protests in Australia were huge. But they weren’t just a protest in solidarity with Black Americans (though that was a part of it), it was a protest about how our Indigenous peoples are treated in this country.

Because this is an international problem.

Malcolm X was the greatest example of the greatest underdog success story in the history of the 20th century. He was simply brilliant.

"It's been that time for a while now."
Damn right. Drop the statues.

*#BlackLivesMatter* is just as important as the fights for freedom in 🇵🇸, in 🇭🇰, and everywhere in the world where perple are having their rights violated.

And Neo-Cons have tried to erase how much whites *hated* MLK.

The fight is righteous. ✊🏿

good to see the young finally catching up to the idea of global struggle.especially for americans it is hard to break the exceptionalism they have been brought up believing in.

I had popped in to this lecture by a former Black Panther leader at Oklahoma University. He said that when the Black Panthers went to Cuba the Cubans decided they were unpredictable and put them in prison. He said he was talking to one of them, and he said he'd decided to leave the United States and ended up in one of the worst prisons on earth, so he wasn't going to make any more decisions again.

Black folk have been fighting for the same human rights ~ including being treated equally under the law, living wages to end the struggle against poverty and universal healthcare to make sure all of our people are well-taken care of ~ for the better part of a century ... changing the viewpoint from civil rights to human rights increases the scope from a national problem to an international one, where the cause can be taken up by movements across the world.

So true. The oneness of us. We can't solve a problem until we transcend the problem and see our interconnectedness.

There is a swiss comedian who has a bit, about feminists, which i think applies here too: geminists are annoying..about as annoying as the nerd in school reminding the teacher of homework. But just as the nerd, there a something else than annoying: they are right! And since people will fight for justice as long as they do not have it, the best way to get rid of those annoying feminists is not dissing the feminists, but to make them not needed anymore. If the sexism one day is gone, there will not be anymore feminists.
I think you can swap out the words to apply here....

The fact that your speaking for our humanity is a reflection of the disregard of black Americans as human beings. Let us speak for ourselves, go work on your people’s callous and insecurity towards black people.

Ok black Americans have problems of our own to deal with. For me it is black peoples first. No hatred toward other races. And I really appreciate all the love that was shown us over the pass few weeks. But we must not lose sight on our financial goals. We have been in this country for generations and we still don’t own nothing. We have a lot of work a head us.

She reminds me of a character on The Muppet Show. Sadly, can't remember the name. Any clues?
