Health care is a complex, fast paced environment where process and human error occur despite the best intentions of well-trained clinicians. Just culture moves the pendulum for dealing with errors in health care back to the middle, where both the organization and its people are held accountable for their actions. With a just culture, the focus shifts from error and outcomes to system design and behavioral choices. Presenters Tonya Martino, RN, BSN, ND, University of Washington Medicine – WISH, and Ross Ehrmantraut, RN, cover a high level overview of what a just culture is, and have a crosswalk discussion of how TeamSTEPPS, high reliability, and just culture are not exclusive of each other.
