The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville

Here begins one of the most remarkable works of history ever fashioned. All the great battles are here, of course, from Bull Run through Shiloh, the Seven Days Battles, and Antietam, but so are the smaller ones: Ball's Bluff, Fort Donelson, Pea Ridge, Island Ten, New Orleans, and Monitor versus Merrimac.

The word "narrative" is the key to this extraordinary book's incandescence and its truth. The story is told entirely from the point of view of the people involved in it. One learns not only what was happening on all fronts but also how the author discovered it during his years of exhaustive research.

This first volume in Shelby Foote's comprehensive history is a must-listen for anyone interested in one of the bloodiest wars in America's history.

Read this a couple of years ago, watched Ken Burns series often, and am thoroughly absorbed in listening to this reread to me. Very interesting indeed. Wonderful if all three volumes could be posted. This is appreciated.

I acquired Vols. 2 & 3 on Audible. Thanks for allowing me access to Vol. 1. I live in Alabama, walking distance from where Emma Sansom showed General Forrest the way over the Black

Why the Wikipedia note on Zachary Taylor?

He was a bit of all things. While favoring the first Grand Wizard of the KKK, he also dug Martin Luther King, Jr.

..I don't fuckin' know! Do you?

Foote was a master of the English language, in literature..that's for sure.

..But don't forget: weigh everything for good vs. evil. No matter who said or did whatever, ..it's up to YOU..to choose right over wrong, always, 'till the day you die.

God bless: Light over Darkness!

This narrators thin, nasal voice is gating irritating and unpleasant to listen to - alas. The voice makes it impossible to continue beyond a few sentences, which is disappointing. Such a shame that Shelby Foote did not narrate it himself.
