I think that method works well for some types of composition. However, I often compose around specific sounds and rhythms.

Recently started using caustic 3 on my phone for ideas. Works great for me. It has enough possibilities to do some sounddesign and it feels right to do it in a sketchy way without bothering about details.

Hello Mike, Thank you so much for the tutorial! I have zero experience in music but would love to learn because it is so moving and creative.
Your breakdown of the basic components of any music give me a direction and hope that someday soon I can be doing something fun and rewarding too.
Most music related sites are either too complicated or just overly classical making it so hard for anyone with zero experience to even think about being able to put enough time and talent to accomplish this.

Lol I actually found out almost same method few days ago and it works well. When I compose I use only drums and pianoroll with piano sound to structure and compose my track. This prevents me to not focus on small and irrelevant details.

I use Notion 6 and Studio One together. Still in the oilfield - no mac, so I have to resort to Notion. Writing songs like crazy.
